About this test

The four temperaments are one of the oldest personality ideas: Greek physicians linked them to the four bodily humors, and the philosopher Immanuel Kant later described them as types of feeling and acting. Sanguine people are sociable and cheerful, choleric people driven and decisive, melancholic people deep and careful, phlegmatic people calm and steady.

The humor theory is long gone, and modern psychology describes personality with traits such as the Big Five instead. The four types are still a handy, memorable way to talk about style. The statements here were written for cv.cm; most people are a mix, so look at all four scores, not just the top one.

FAQ

What are the four temperaments?

Sanguine (outgoing, cheerful, spontaneous), choleric (ambitious, decisive, quick to anger), melancholic (thoughtful, detail-minded, sensitive) and phlegmatic (calm, patient, easygoing).

Is the four temperaments theory scientific?

Not in its original form: the idea that body fluids shape character was abandoned long ago. The four styles roughly line up with combinations of extraversion and emotional stability, which are well studied. Treat the result as a conversation starter.

Can I be two temperaments?

Yes. Most people have one or two strong temperaments and some of the others. Your result shows all four scores so you can see your blend.

Which temperament is best?

None. Each has strengths and blind spots: the sanguine brings energy, the choleric drive, the melancholic depth and the phlegmatic calm.
