Refresh rate test

Measuring… keep this tab in front.

How to use this tool

See the refresh rate your screen and browser really run at. Nothing is uploaded.

  1. Keep the tab in front

The test starts by itself. Leave the tab in front for a few seconds while it counts frames.

  2. Read the rate

The big number is your refresh rate in Hz, with the nearest standard rate, the frame time and skipped frames.

  3. Watch the motion test

The block moves at the chosen speed. At higher Hz it looks smoother; a jerky block with spikes in the graph means skipped frames.

FAQ

How does the refresh rate test work?

The page counts how often the browser draws a frame. Browsers draw once per screen refresh, so the time between frames gives the refresh rate in Hz.

Why does it show 60 Hz on my 144 Hz monitor?

Check the rate set in your system's display settings, the cable (older HDMI caps at 60 Hz at high resolutions) and battery saver. With two screens, the browser follows the one its window is on.

What are skipped frames?

Frames that took about twice as long as normal: the screen showed the previous frame again. A few are normal while the page loads; many mean the computer or browser is busy.

What is the moving block for?

At a higher refresh rate the block moves in smaller steps and looks smoother and sharper. Compare speeds to see judder or blur.

Why did the number change when I switched tabs?

Hidden tabs get few or no frames, so the test starts over when you come back. Keep the tab in front for a few seconds for a steady reading.
