  1. Decide simplify or from a decimal

Whole numbers use simplify. 4 and 6 become 2/3. A decimal such as 0.75 uses the other mode and becomes 3/4. The sign stays on the numerator. A negative denominator flips.

  3. Enter whole numbers, or one decimal

Denominator 0 fails. A decimal typed into the numerator is rejected in simplify mode. Switch mode instead of rounding it yourself first.

  4. Read the fraction and the decimal line

Copy keeps the fraction text, such as 2/3. The decimal line is the check. If it does not match the number you meant, the input was only approximated.

  5. A long decimal stops at denominator 10,000

0.333333 becomes 1/3. A decimal that is not a short fraction stays close once the denominator would pass 10,000. Read the decimal line again.

0.75 becomes 3/4. A long decimal stops at denominator 10,000.
0.75 becomes 3/4. A long decimal stops at denominator 10,000.
  6. Keep it as an improper fraction

5/2 stays 5/2. If a worksheet wants 2 1/2, split the whole part after you copy.
