How to calculate a discount

You have a list price and a percent off. You will read the sale price and the saving in this tab. 20% off 100 leaves 80.00. A 20% margin on a selling price of 100 is a different question: that one is about cost.

  1. Separate a discount from a margin

20% off 100 means the buyer pays 80.00. A 20% margin on a selling price of 100 means the cost was 80 and the profit is 20. Same digits, different job.

    20% off 100: sale 80.00, saving 20.00. Not a 20% margin.
    20% off 100: sale 80.00, saving 20.00. Not a 20% margin.

  3. Enter the list price and the percent off

The price must be zero or more. 100 at 20% off is a sale price of 80.00 and a saving of 20.00. 80 at 25% off is 60.00 and 20.00.

  4. Read sale price and saving

Both lines use two decimals. There is no currency. Copy both, then use the line the form named.

  5. A percent over 100 can go below zero

120% off 100 is a sale price of -20.00 and a saving of 120.00. That is arithmetic. A shop tag that cannot go below zero needs a different rule.

    120% off 100 is -20.00. Minus 10% raises the price to 110.00.
    120% off 100 is -20.00. Minus 10% raises the price to 110.00.
  6. A negative percent raises the price

Minus 10% on 100 is a sale price of 110.00. The saving line is -10.00. If the tag says 10% off, the percent is 10, not -10.
